Hundreds of hospitals and medical points have been targeted by rockets in this terrible war in Syria for several years. These hospitals have been attacked directly particularly in areas densely populated by civilians, and only a few survive.
With this deteriorating situation the health sector, which is the main sector within Syria as a means of saving thousands of lives from the hell surrounding them, Al-Sham Foundation has established an emergency medical system aiming at saving the sick and wounded and pulling them from under the rubble.
In the beginning of March 2015, the system was launched in four governorates, namely Idlib, Aleppo, and their countryside, Lattakia and its countryside, and Damascus countryside. Ambulances are distributed in each governorate among 21 sectors, so as to cover the needs of the residents and to be able to transfer the injured to hospitals and medical points for treatment as soon as possible.
The system consists of 54 vans that are equipped to be ambulances, each containing a medical wardrobe with a stretcher, pull-out device, an oxygen cylinder, a few microsurgery tools, consumables and emergency medicines, as well as a breathing machine for very critical cases.
The project aims to:
-Evacuate the wounded from the areas of shelling to the primary medical points or specialized surgical hospitals
-Professionally transfer the wounded to prevent medical errors during transportation
-Provide optimal medical service through the provision of first aid before reaching the hospital
-Classify the wounded in cases of severe shelling in accordance with their needs
This system was able to transport 39000 cases. This figure represents half of the workload of the ambulance system operation in the Syrian provinces. This has prompted Al-sham Humanitarian Foundation to formulate a future vision to achieve a greater spread of the system and increase the number of a well-trained staff.
